Contemporary artworks
inspired by African imagery
We create artworks that express contemporary interpretations of African cultural heritage and imagery, in order to ensure that they continue to thrive and be inherited by future generations.
The Lumans silk square is an invitation to wear one's cultural heritage with pride.
Our Mission
At Lumans, we believe that art can achieve what words sometimes struggle to convey: transcend generations, cross borders, reconcile identities.
Our mission is to document and celebrate African cultures through works of art: worn, collected and passed on. Each silk scarf is a fragment of history brought to life, designed on the continent by artists and crafted with the care that this history deserves.
We design for those who love to:
-Wear what they understand,
-Gift more than an object,
-Collect a rare piece.
What does Lumans mean?
Lumans draws its inspiration from the founder's name. It is also a nod to its English paronym “Humans”
With this name, we aim to evoke both the words “Light” and “Human,” which underscore our desire to highlight the beauty of our humanity.
Our Artistic Approach
The starting point: a story
Lumans does not make accessories. We design artworks to be worn, stories to be cherished and this distinction carries responsibilities.
For us, African creativity is not an inspiration. It is the source.
Every Lumans design is created on the continent. It is hand-drawn by African artists living in Africa, who are selected for their creativity and their interpretation of the story, not for anonymous execution.
From the narrative research, the creative brief, the sketches, the final illustration to its digital conversion: each artwork draws on countless hours of work and multiple areas of expertise..
Social impact
Choosing Lumans means becoming part of a thrilling adventure.
It means contributing to a creative African economy built on value. It means affirming that an object can be beautiful, ethical, and meaningful all at once.
Passing on memories is also a social act.
Lumans’ artworks do not depict Africa from the outside. They depict it from the inside through artists who live there, stories drawn from that world, and traditions passed from one generation to the next.
To wear a Lumans square is to carry a story that might have remained unseen. It is to give it a place in today’s world.
Responsible Craftsmanship
Lumans silk scarves are 100% made in Italy by partners with GOTS and FSC® certifications.
These certifications ensure more sustainable production and processing methods that respect both people and the environment. This is achieved by promoting the use of natural and organic fibers, prohibiting the use of toxic chemicals, and ensuring fair working conditions: safety, regulated working hours, and no forced nor child labor.
Artisanal Expertise
The entire production process of Lumans silk scarves is operated by master artisans specialising in silk.
Every stage of silk thread transformation and processing takes place in Italy, in the Como region, home to a long and rich tradition in these crafts.
Our artisan workshops carry over 70 years of expertise in the textile industry. They are renowned for the exceptional quality of their materials and their meticulous attention to the finishing of each piece.
Lumans silk squares are hand-rolled to deliver the finest high-end result that endures over time.
THE FOUNDER'S MANIFESTO
I grew up in Cameroon, surrounded by an immensely rich cultural heritage. Yet, like many others, I didn’t learn about our history in school. I had to seek it out on my own.
In a world where everything seems to move faster, reconnecting with one's heritage becomes essential.
